Registering them will not stop the fact that people are selfish

Registering the gun would tell the police who the proper owner was, and why it came into possession of a drug using robber. The goal here is to deny the gun to those who are selfish, irrational, and prone to violence. Of course that won't stop all murder, but it will greatly reduce murder at a distance by young people who are high on drugs and agitated.
