aryl,

<< Brazil choosing 1800 mhz instead of 1900 mhz. Why does this exclude CDMA >>

There is currently no available CDMA infra or handsets for 1800 MHz op.

GSM infra or handsets are available for 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHZ. Nokia specializes in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz combo (but also provides 1900 MHZ including dual mode GSM 1900/AMPS 800).

The Brazil 1800 MHz decision essentially dedicates the spectrum to GSM. Spectrum above 1800 MHz will be available for 3G along the European & Japanese model for which DS was designed.

Brazil shares the 800 MHz AMPs heritage of the Americas. They deviate here from the Americas model of 800 MHZ and 1900 MHX and follow the European model for 2G and 3G.

This reduces the CDMA advantage. It reduces economies of scale that accrue to countries implementing 800 MHz/1900 MHz systems of any technology. It fractures the Americas.

Bummer!

<< Also, what is your opinion regarding 1900mhz being reserved for 3G? Does this mean that both DS-CDMA and MC-CDMA can be used in this spectrum or only DS? >>

Either, when MC evolves, but it fits the current DS specification.

<< What spectrum will current CDMA carriers in Brazil use when they upgrade to CDMA2000? >>

800 MHz
