Decision on IMT-2000 Screening to Be Delayed

By Yang Sung-jin

Staff Reporter

The Ministry of Information and Communication,
which supervises the screening process for
IMT-2000 business license applications, has said it
will put off the deadline for the preliminary
decisions about condition due on June 30 for a
week.

The ministry originally planned to reveal the
number of licensees and screening method by the
end of this month but a top official said the schedule
may suffer a delay due to technical reasons.

Sok Ho-ick, director of the Telecom Business
Promotion Bureau, said the National Assembly
committee had yet to decide the schedule for
deliberations, which may lead to a delay.

``The ministry will submit the detailed report on
mainstream ideas about the screening conditions to
the committee before announcing the result to the
public,'' Sok said.

He said once the committee members finalized the
meeting schedule, the ministry would be able to go
ahead with the announcement.

Telecom operators and the local media have been
waiting for the result largely because it is expected
to shape the overall picture for the much-coveted
IMT-2000 business license.

Sok said final decisions about the schedule are
uncertain since Information and Communication
Minister Ahn Byung-yub is now in China to try and
secure Korea-China cooperation in the telecom
industry.

``The underlying principle is that the ministry will
reschedule the announcement, reflecting the move
by the National Assembly committee,'' he said.

If the announcement is to be put off, public forums
slated for June 27 and a policy coordination meeting
the next day will be postponed, Sok added.
