Taipei, June 21, 2000 (CENS)--Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. will make public its plan of purchasing a code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile phone system for 1.6 million phone lines on Friday.
The state-run telecom will purchase the CDMA2000 system for third-generation mobile phones. It will spend over NT$10 billion (US$322.58 million at US$1:NT$31) on the project in the next five years.
The new system will have a telecom transmission speed over 144kbps, to offer the most advanced service and seize an early lead in the new telecom service in Taiwan.
The first shipment is scheduled to be delivered in July next year with transmission speeds ranging from 64kbps and 115kbps. Mass production has not begun yet, but will require that the contract winner upgrade the products to models over 144kbps per second.
The huge contract has attracted keen interest from leading suppliers in the U.S., South Korea and Europe.
Bids for the supply contract will come from Lucent Technologies Inc., Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Goldstar, Alcatel SA, and Ericsson Telefon AB L.M.
