Good observation. One exception is a gap up that follows through. And when it pulls back, it soon encounters support without filling the gap to then continue as a trending market. The cynic in me sometimes wonders about a gap down when there is an intact trend. I am thinking the open down is an opportunity for the specialist or MM to pick up stock "cheap" to then sell at the anticipated higher prices.

There is one other type of market I have noticed that has a late afternoon rally. This is when price congests most of the day going nowhere. But on a large time frame chart, it shows a type of congestion pattern that finishes off by putting in a test of support which then launches price upward for a very good move up.
