Then you see "the best it can do"- and if it does pitifully then it is pitiful. I think there is shame in being a pitiful human- if you don't, we differ. An animal has no reason- it would be cruel to poke an animal. You KNOW what you'll get. If you are saying some people choose to have as little reason as animals- I guess I'll have to say "Yes, sad but true" but you don't know who they are until they show themselves. And I think it IS a choice.

I don't go hunting for animals masquerading as humans- they come to me. If they don't come to me, I won't test them. And if they "fail" it is not my problem it's theirs.
