Lucent Technologies and Sprint to Trial
High-Speed Data Solution For Mobile Internet

MURRAY HILL, N.J. and KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU -
news) and Sprint PCS (NYSE: PCS - news) today announced that they will conduct a joint trial of a third-generation
(3G) wireless data solution based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) that will provide high-speed access to the
Mobile Internet. The wireless technology, named 1xEVolution (1xEV), is based on High Data Rate (HDR), and has
evolved directly through jointly developed operator requirements.

The trial, to begin over the Sprint PCS network in the first half of 2001, involves testing and verification of the 2.4
megabit per second (Mbps) 3G data capability using Lucent's 3G-ready Flexent(TM) wireless network platform. It will
initially take place in the Sprint PCS Technology Integration Center (STIC) in Lenexa, Kan.

The trial will enable both Sprint PCS and Lucent Technologies to test the technology in a real-world environment. The
trial will also test the functionality and network impact of a wide range of applications enabled by the Mobile Internet.

``This trial again demonstrates our commitment to provide Sprint PCS customers with leading-edge technology in
wireless data and end-to-end solutions,'' said Oliver Valente, vice president of Technology and Advanced Systems
Development, Sprint PCS. ``Sprint PCS continues to work with Lucent and other leading vendors to refine standards
under the cdma2000 umbrella to ensure robust industry support for the full range of cdma2000 evolution options.''

Recently, the CDMA Development Group submitted the 1xEV specification to a global standards organization, the Third
Generation Partnership Project 2. The first phase of 1xEV is optimized for packet data services at speeds up to 2.4
Mbps, providing an end-to-end network based on Internet protocol (IP) technology. It is designed as an extension to
the existing cdma2000-1X 3G standard and provides a complementary solution to second generation (2G) and 3G
technologies by allowing service providers to protect their current wireless and PCS network infrastructure investments
as they evolve to 3G services and applications.

Lucent's wireless network platform includes the Flexent(TM) CDMA Modular Cell base station, commercially available
today, which supports today's cdmaOne 2G standard, and can be upgraded easily to support the 3G cdma2000 and
1xEV standards.

``1xEV adds high-speed IP-based wireless Internet access to complement cdma2000/cdmaOne voice and data
technology,'' said Bill Wiberg, president of Lucent's cellular and Personal Communications Services (PCS) business.
``With 1xEV's superior capacity and performance, operators like Sprint PCS can truly meet the needs of the evolving
mobile Internet.''

``Our network evolution to 3G 1x CDMA technology starting in the second half of 2001 will set the stage for even
better performance with 1xEV since it has the same radio characteristics,'' said Valente.
