Billionaire investment guru Warren Buffett plans to have surgery next month to remove benign polyps found in his colon during a routine medical examination.

The 69-year-old chairman of Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc. will likely need to stay in an unidentified Omaha hospital for several days after the surgery, but he "expects to return quickly to work," the company said in a press release Wednesday.

The polyps were found during a routine exam Monday, the release said. Otherwise, the company said, Buffett is in "excellent health."

Berkshire said it made the announcement to forestall rumors about Buffett's health. In February, false reports that Buffett was in poor health sparked a sharp drop in the company's stock price.

At Berkshire's annual shareholders meeting in April, Buffett assured investors that the company would be in good hands after his death.

Buffett ranked as the world's fourth-richest person on the latest Forbes magazine list of wealthy individuals, boasting a fortune worth an estimated $28 billion.

He is revered for his ability to choose good investments - investments that have made millionaires of many Berkshire shareholders.
