Baseball: Bad trip to the doctor's office: Ordonez done for year Jun 21, 2000 (The Sports Network via COMTEX) -- New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Mets shortstop Rey Ordonez, who was supposed to miss up to six weeks after suffering a broken left forearm May 29, will miss the remainder of the 2000 season because the injury is not healing properly. Ordonez, a three-time Gold Glove winner, found out Wednesday during a checkup by Dr. Andrew Weiland that he will need a plate and screws inserted into his arm. Ordonez will likely undergo surgery Monday, and the plate will remain in his arm until January. Kurt Abbott and Melvin Mora will continue to fill in for Ordonez, who was batting .188 with no home runs and five RBIs at the time of the injury. Abbott is hitting .202 with three home runs and seven RBIs, while Mora is batting .255 with two homers and 15 RBIs. The 27-year-old Ordonez, a defensive star, was injured at second base during the first inning of the May 29 game at Los Angeles, as he attempted to tag out baserunner F.P. Santangelo. *** end of story *** |
