<Is there some heavy-duty selling going on, or is this deal not a money-maker? >
I'd say there are some good strategic opennings here with the IBM news, but it is not a direct statement of making money. The fact is that the VoXML forum has been around for quite a while and GMGC has been a member from the start. This news is a result of that, and it means they are just getting closer to having something that will be used. Still, IBM is a very aggressive player in e-commerce and it's good.
Funny thing is when you think about it, there still seems to be the issue, where do you process the transaction (?) on your interface device, or at a NOC somewhere in the Network?
Interesting to see IBM and MOT working together. Why shouldn't they use MOT's myshpere? This must have been shelved.
The other announcement seems much less interesting until it becomes clear that they are not just an extension of the failing Portico strategy. Any word yet what is costs to use Polestar?
I guess the meat and potatos of GMGC is still GM's Onstar, until these relationships have at least 6 months to develop. I suspect Oracle must be lurking there somewhere still. In fact, the IBM announcement could imply that the other VoXML customers will use GMGC's NOC as the voice gateway. VoXML only seems to provide the hooks to interact with speech, but not the infrastructure.
