MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. said today that LocalEyes, a huge new Web site with more than one million pages, will be hosted exclusively on Sun(TM) Ultra(TM) Enterprise(TM) servers.
LocalEyes has created more than 2,000 virtual business communities in a new Web utility that promises to make it easy for consumers to quickly find local business information anywhere in the United States. Running this complex site on Sun's scalable servers ensures that LocalEyes will be able to handle the heavy load of expected user traffic, while continuing to regularly add content to this data-intensive site.
Available at www.localeyes.com, the virtual business communities are designed to facilitate consumer buying both online and through traditional means. Based on proprietary GeoTopic technology, LocalEyes has developed a complex infrastructure which seamlessly integrates local Web search, Yellow Page directories, mapping and topical content. Users locate information by submitting queries, browsing a topical directory and navigating maps.
"While the World Wide Web literally brings the world to users' fingertips, the downside is it can be difficult for consumers to access information that will assist them in making purchase decisions," said Chris Hurst, vice president for telecommunications and cable market development for Sun Microsystems Computer Company. "LocalEyes provides an innovative solution to this problem -- resulting in benefits for both users and the advertisers trying to reach them. Sun's Ultra Enterprise servers have the performance, throughput and reliability needed to handle the unique demands of a site like this."
LocalEyes uses Sun Ultra Enterprise servers, which incorporate symmetric multiprocessors (SMP) SPARC(TM) microprocessors and the scalable, multithreaded Solaris(TM) operating environment -- Sun's industry-leading version of UNIX(R).
"LocalEyes is one of the largest, most comprehensive sites on the Internet, and we looked at different systems to host it," said Mike Simon, president of LocalEyes, based in McLean, Va. "Sun was the clear choice. Solaris had the robustness and scalability we needed to have -- and the Sun servers could be easily expanded to handle 10 times our projected performance and data requirements." Simon added that since LocalEyes is intended as a resource for all Web users, reliability was a key concern. The Ultra Enterprise' mission-critical design -- with "hot swappable" components and automatic diagnostic software to spot trouble -- effectively addressed those concerns.
The LocalEyes site is designed to have broad appeal to people and businesses seeking geographically-specific business information. For advertisers -- from whom LocalEyes expects to derive much of its income -- the site will make it easy to target prospective customers on a local or regional basis. Now, advertisers will be able to use the Web to make geographically-based media buys in more than 2,000 recognized markets-- just as they have traditionally done with print and broadcast media.
