Tokyo, June 22 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Posts and Telecommunications Ministry on June 30 will give three cellular phone groups, including NTT DoCoMo Inc., the go-ahead to offer the next-generation IMT-2000 cell phone services.
The ministry's approval will be based on Thursday's report by the Telecommunications Council, its advisory panel, recommending it to issue licenses to that effect, ministry officials said.

The IMT-2000 system enables users to make cell phone calls both at home and abroad and enjoy high-speed data transmissions as well as Internet access.

The NTT DoCoMo group plans to launch the world's first IMT-2000 service on May 30, 2001.

Nine J-Phone companies of the Japan Telecom Co. group plan to start their IMT-2000 service on Dec. 1, 2001, and the alliance between IDO Corp. and the DDI Cellular group on Sept. 30, 2002.

All the services will start in and around the three largest Japanese cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
