I like you mover story. The mess comes when the movers decide to 'fix' some of your original stuff. They substitute tulip-bulbs for light-bulbs but otherwise don't touch the lamps. You opt for the original, and since the lamps ARE original, they get left behind. Trouble is, they no longer work.

A good installation program will NOT replace existing files with their own version (with the same name) without asking first. After all, once the file is overwritten, the original is gone. (Your backups become priceless!)

This makes the case for every software package having its own folder and keeping ALL of its needed files in this folder. Likewise, each package should store ALL its registry stuff under only ONE key. This would make uninstalls easy.
