Sunoco: Pt Breeze, Pa. FCC Shut After Catalyst Release Dow Jones Newswires June 22, 2000 NEW YORK -- A malfunction in the instrumentation of the 40,000-barrels-a-day fluid catalytic cracking unit at Sunoco, Inc.'s (Sun) 130,000-b/d Point Breeze, Philadelphia, Pa. refinery caused officials to close the unit early Thursday, company spokesman Jerry Davis told Dow Jones Newswires.
The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. EDT (0830 GMT) Catalyst dust, known also as aluminus silica, spewed over the surrounding community.
"The dust, while it is a nuisance to the community, is nontoxic," Davis said.
After the preliminary investigation the cause of the malfunction was identified and the problem was corrected.
"Operators at the facility are prepping the unit for an eventual startup, perhaps later today," Davis added.
Sunoco operates a 200,000-b/d refinery at Gerard Point, Pa. The FCC capacity there is rated at 73,500 b/d.
