Hitachi Not To Revise Profit Outlook On Patent Settlement
Friday, June 23, 2000
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Hitachi Ltd. (6501) does not expect any major impact on its earnings results for the current fiscal year ending March 2001 from its payment of an undisclosed sum in the settlement of its patent litigation with Rambus Inc. (RMBS) of the US, a Hitachi spokesman said Friday.

"We have agreed to pay the past license fees and quarterly royalty fees to Rambus," the official said. "We have no plan to make downward revisions of our earnings forecasts this fiscal year." Under the agreement, Rambus has granted Hitachi a worldwide license under certain Rambus patents and patent applications for single and double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory devices, and controllers that interface with such memory devices.

Rambus initially filed the suit in the U.S. Federal District Court and in Mannheim, Germany, on January 18, seeking sales injunctions for products containing the disputed technology.

On March 23, Rambus requested that the International Trade Commission investigate illegal importation and sales of Hitachi products covered by the patents.

The suits also involved Sega Enterprises Ltd. (7964), whose Dreamcast game system uses Hitachi microprocessors.
