Japan's DoCoMo to add i-mode English content

TOKYO, June 23 (Reuters) - NTT DoCoMo Inc <9437.T> said on Friday it would add a various English-language content to its i-mode portal site for foreign users in Japan.

Subscribers of DoCoMo's i-mode cellular phone, which can access the Internet, totalled 7.86 million as of June 21, a spokeswoman for DoCoMo, Japan's biggest cell phone carrier, said. The i-mode phone was launched in February last year in Japan.

The move may open up a lead over rival carriers.

Rival KDDI group's cell phone carriers including DDI Cellular, IDO and Tu-ka have offered English-laungage content from April 1999 when they started their Internet access service.

KDD <9431.T>, DDI <9433.T> and IDO will merge in October to formally become KDDI.

Subscribers of KDDI group's carriers for EZ-web Internet-phones totalled 2.19 million as of May 17, a DDI spokesman said.

DoCoMo said the services in English will start on July 3, offering 15 different kinds of content including news, travel information, database and entertainment.

DoCoMo's shares closed at 3.01 million yen on Friday, down 0.99 percent.
