Telson, Nokia to jointly develop CDMA handsets - Korea Herald koreaherald.co.kr
Mobile phone producer Telson Electronics signed an agreement with Nokia of Finland yesterday to jointly develop and produce mobile handsets based on the code-division multiple access (CDMA) standard.
Nokia, the global cellular industry giant, will provide the design, user interface and other technological specifications to the Korean firm, which will combine them with its own specifications.
The Korean firm will handle the research, development and production for the new CDMA handset model, which will be supplied under the Nokia brand.
Nokia expects the partnership to boost its presence in the domestic market.
"Besides expanding its product portfolio, Nokia will secure the ability to better meet the requirements of Korean consumers from the tie-up," said Nigel Litchfield, Nokia vice-president for Asia-Pacific operation.
The company produces mobile handsets based on GSM, the European wireless standard, for exports in a factory in Masan, South Kyongsang Province.
In a bid to advancing into the Korean CDMA market, the company set up a mobile R&D center in southern Seoul last year.
Litchfield said the company will expand its cooperation with Telson to develop products targeting the world market, he added.
Founded in 1992, Telson is a leading supplier of mobile handsets and pagers in Korea. The company has focused on CDMA products since 1997 and supplied more than 3 million units to Korean, U.S. and Latin American markets. In 1999, Telson's net sales totaled $350 million.
