Intel Establishes Software Development Center in Russia
MOSCOW--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 2000--Intel Corp. today announced the establishment of a Software Development Center based in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. The center currently employs over 100 software specialists and is expected to grow to 500 employees in the next three to five years. The announcement was made by Intel President and Chief Executive Officer, Craig R. Barrett, during his visit to Moscow.
``Software development is a critical capability to support Intel's technology innovation for the worldwide Internet economy,'' explained Barrett. ``Highly-skilled software engineers are needed to support the development of high performance computing and communication technologies and products. We welcome these specialists to Intel and believe they will enable us to greatly strengthen our e-Business application development.''
For the past seven years, Intel's Microcomputer Software Labs (MSL), which is part of the Intel Architecture Group, has used subcontractors in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia. In establishing the Russia Software Development Center, Intel makes these subcontractors permanent employees who will concentrate on strengthening Intel's ``performance libraries.''
Performance libraries are a collection of mathematical libraries used in digital signal processing, speech recognition, image processing and linear algebra. They are also used to create advanced 3-D graphics capabilities and to provide Software Development Kit (SDK) products for Intel© Itanium(TM) processors (scheduled to reach the marketplace later this year).
``We believe these software experts will enable us to create new and innovative software development products that will give our customers the tools to exploit the power of Intel architecture for e-Business solutions,'' said Richard Wirt, general manager of MSL. ``This is an exciting step forward for Intel as we expand our capabilities in performance-oriented software development products and advanced new technologies.''
Initially, the Russia Software Development Center will support the Intel Architecture Group and the company's Network Communications Group in their development efforts. In the future, the center is also expected to support several other Intel business groups.
