Now that the fanfare surrounding the home HIV test kits has
faded, I wonder if the sales have as well. I don't see that JNJ's
Confide test kits move all that well. There doesn't seem to be much
advertising either. So, maybe JNJ will abandon Confide the way they did the Cholesterol test kit? This is just
speculation, but they have set the precedent of dumping products
which did not meet expectations. That would be good news for
a small company like Chemtrak. It would take a major competitor
out of the market. What is peanuts for JNJ would be candy for CMTR.

Anyway, did you notice that Home Access Health has dropped the
price of their own HIV test kit? The basic one is selling for
around $30. and the Express version is around $45.

I have been watching QDEL lately and have been encouraged that there
is definitely money to be made in this business. They posted
1996 sales of around $41 million. And they are still growing.
Hopefully as companies in this market consistently display sales and earnings growth, the whole sector will get noticed by bigger investors.
