That was a movie, we're talking about real life. How about another movie that impacted real life and the death penalty? The Thin Blue Line, which re-examined the case of a convicted murderer on death row who was really innocent. The movie caused such a furor the man's case was re-opened and guess what? he was found to be innocent and released. He would have been long dead if one man, the writer of that movie, hadn't acted. The State sure wasn't going to help him... "What? Help a convicted murdering scum? Innocent? They all say they're innocent, right?"
