>> RUMOR MILL: NOKIA TO BUY QUALCOMM, OXYGEN TO FOLD?

The two biggest rumors in the telecom industry this week are beauties: one suggests that Nokia may takeover Qualcomm, while another suggests that the ambitious undersea cable proposal, Project Oxygen, may be about to fold.

American message boards were abuzz with rumors yesterday that Scandinavian mobile phone giant Nokia was interested in buying out CDMA pioneer Qualcomm. A merged company would have a dominant position in both the rival CDMA2000 and W-CDMA markets for next generation wireless networks. Nokia can certainly afford Qualcomm - its market cap of $250 billion is five times that of Qualcomm's, which has been ravaged by the recent US stock correction. Nokia stock fell dramatically on the NYSE as the rumor swept the Internet yesterday. <<
