Sprint PCS will trial Lucent's HDR technology

KELLY CARROLL

Sprint PCS wants to push more of the Internet onto
consumers' wireless devices. In order to eventually move
beyond the text format it currently offers to color and graphics,
the carrier has teamed with Lucent Technologies to trial a third
generation wireless data solution, based on CDMA technology.

The carrier will begin to test Lucent's 1xEVolution technology,
which is based on High Data Rate, over its network during the
first half of 2001.

"This technology will allow us to have a more robust offering
than what you see with our wireless Web product," said Oliver
Valente, vice president of technology and advance system
development for Sprint PCS.

While Lucent's wireless network platform supports cdmaOne
2G standard today, it can be upgraded to support 3G cdma2000
and 1xEV standards in the future.

The trial, which initially will take place at Sprint PCS'
Technology Integration Center in Lenexa, Kan., will occur
in a real-world environment in which the carrier can test
the functionality and network impact of mobile Internet
applications.

Sprint PCS intends to target both the consumer and business
market and believes to be between 18 to 24 months away from
rolling out offerings, Valente said.
