Yes the system is imperfect. But being an imperfect human being, I suspect your(and my) reaction to your own family being murdered, would not be so calm as to say you hope the guilty party would spend his/her life getting three hots and a cot...plus access to a law library to give the system fits for the rest of his life, plus access to the internet where he can "date" your cousin by email, plus...etc..etc.
