I know you're not around, but this post was cited and is under discussion, so:

This post lists a number of rationales for punishment:

1. Retribution.
2. Preemption of private revenge.
3. Bringing home to criminals the seriousness of their behaviour.
4. Rehabilitation.
5. Deterrence.

Oddly, the reason that seems to me most compelling is omitted: simple self-defense. We call on the justice system to identify those who have proven themselves too dangerous to live freely among us and remove them from circulation.

This is not the only reason, but it is certainly one of the most compelling ones.

It should be noted that of these rationales, the only one which is served better by execution than by life imprisonment is the "first and foremost": retribution.
