AOL sees big phone use of short messaging in US. In Europe it is the rage.

AOL not sleeping......"In the United States, much of the betting is on something called ``short messaging
service.' This is
similar to America Online and other firms' instant messenger services, but on mobile phones. This
service has become a phenomenon in Europe, where wireless data services have also become
popular and teenagers routinely zap short messages back and forth.

AOL is one of the companies leading the charge in this area. At the show, AOL announced a
partnership with Sprint Corp. that will make its instant messenger available to Sprint wireless
customers. Just as they can on a PC, customers can keep a buddy list that lets them know who is
connected and send messages either to another phone or a PC."
