Hello Jack, I couldn't have characterized the current inter-relationships between emerging optical transmission schemes and SONET/SDH any better than you did. And thanks for the acknowledgements, I appreciate them.
I agree that GbE is beginning to heat up and will impact the edge and metro access arrangements. It already has, where dark fiber is available. I'll go several steps beyond this observation. I can also see GbE, and future 10 GbE making great inroads into traditional WAN/Internet spaces, and into the delivery of residential Internet/voice/utility management several years out, maybe even IP TV in fiber to the home and curb(FTTx) scenarios. These may be implemented by ILECs and some of the power consortia and other utilities who now seem predisposed to back such ventures leveraging their rights of way. One such model is known as Canarie, which is being examined now in Canada.

As relates to the new availability of cheap bandwidth which is made possible by dwdm, some interesting things happen when such affordable "robustness" avails itself to users who have been accustomed over the years to paying top dollar for every bit sent. I address some of the momentary gotchas that present themselves in the following:

I once followed Ciena here in SI rather religiously when it was the one of the few games in town doing wdm. The field, as you know, has exploded almost beyond comprehensible levels during the past two years. This puts a strain on one's time. In this regard I'm thankful that others are doing the summaries and rollups. For example, Light Reading at lightreading.com and a new periodical, Optical Networks, which can be found at optical-networks.com , and some excellent texts that are readable by mere mortals that are now available at your favorite book store, making the task a little less time consuming, and easier, to digest. -----
I'd be honored if you and others here contributed to the FCTF when you see something that interests you, as well. The board is, for the most part, vendor-agnostic and keyed to focusing on generic developments, generally kicking around thoughts and ideas as they relate to emerging telecommunications technologies and Internet. Although, we've also been known to slip in a genome and nanotech discussion in between those which relate to residential wiring and plain old trivia, every now and then ;-)
