RR, Rose et al: Thinking outside box...

... and general "hellos" all around ... fascinating to say hi these days to people halfway around world; halfway around U.S. and in my own locale, all at same time.

I've tried to find the origin of the phrase that's not copyrighted, far as I know, and come up empty.

As a PR writer for some (one in particular for which I've done work for years now) big tech-oriented corps, I've written about the "value" and "need" for employees to "think outside the box."

I once knew the direct origin/author of the phrase because I wrote about it. Coined by one of hundreds of pricey "productivity/employee motivational consultants" at least 10 years ago ... these "snake oil salesmen" ( sorry, Voltaire <g> ) peddle "instant fixes" to the corporations to get more out of the employees who are stupid enough (or, more like, NEED, for purposes of financial survival) to stay employed if fortunate enough not to be "downsized" in the semi-annual "layoffs." That "improve the efficiency" of any "lean and mean" organization ... yada, yada, yada.

The reason the term grates, IMO, is that we are "encouraged" (LOL) to "behave" under the stringent demands of the Puritan work ethic.

That's because we're all "worker bees."

This phenomenon that Voltaire regularly addresses as a recurring theme is what I so strongly identify with in seeking to break the emotions that encumber us as investors in these corporations.

Thinking outside the box was created to get more work out of fewer employees.

Somehow or other, we as investors MUST GET BEYOND thinking of ourselves as 'worker bees,' and start thinking of ourselves as owners of these corporations.

Sounds cold -- it IS DAMNED COLD -- the paradox of being an investor now who should "welcome" massive layoffs of employees in huge corporations in which I own shares of stock is something I grapple with.

I don't think it's especially great news when CPQ or TXN lays off 8,000 people. It f______g bothers me, damnit.

Sometimes I think I just ain't cut out to be rich. LOL!

You can take the girl or guy out of the middle class (roots) ... but you can't take the middle class values/roots out of the person.

Anybody else identify with any of this?
