Yes, for a very short time. IBM's line will be moving from .25um to .18um in the fall, which will give a good performance boost. In 2001, the POWER4 will be released which is going to be a killer chip. It will contain 2 CPU's per chip. 4 of these chips will be on one module the size of the palm of your hand. This little 4 chip 8 CPU module will provide more power than the current S80 has with 24 processors.

Sun's MAJC architecture is very similar to IBM's architecture. Both companies are looking to get great java performance. All other companies architectures are at polar opposites (mainly the Itanium) and are going to have terrible java performance. Itanium has been talked about for ever, before java started to get big. It's an outdated architecture and is DOA in my opinion. I think this is why Sun has given half hearted support of Itanium.

And by the way weren't they supposed to be released already?

Yes, where are they? I wonder if McNealy has taken a break from trash talking IBM to figure out exactly where these Ultra Sparc III's are at?

I'm not sure if it even matters at this point, Sun seems to be sold out for the rest of the year. It will be a big deal if Sun can't get better chips by next year though.
