Winbond's DRAM Contract Price to Hit US$9 in Q3
June 26, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Winbond Electronics Corp. is forecasting that the contract price of 64Mb DRAMs will climb to US$9 by the third quarter, up from the US$7 to US$8 projected in May.

The prediction came after U.S.-based AICE's 64Mb DRAM's spot price reached US$8.50 recently, helped by robust demand.

Winbond's third-quarter output is set to outstrip second-quarter output by 5,000 units and deliver encouraging quarterly profits. As Winbond's production costs have fallen below US$4 after an upgrade in its process to 0.175-micron technology, the company expects to more than double its profit.

The spot price of 64Mb DRAMs revisited hit early this year after standing firmly above US$8 recently. This will promise windfall profits to local manufacturers, who were earlier expecting the annual price to be as low as US$6.50 to US$7.50 on average.

The trend will automatically push up Winbond's contract price from its present US$6.80 to US$9 in the third quarter.

Toshiba Corp. accounts for most of the company's contract production, accounting for 30 percent of its total production, with the remainder being shipped on a spot-price basis.

DRAM manufacturers, who normally review their contract price twice a month to accurately reflect the market situation by monitoring the spot price, now believe that the third-quarter price may visit US$10 if the contract price reaches US$9, a level industry observers had earlier thought unlikely until the end of the year.
