(COMTEX) B: IBM To Reveal Memory Technology NEW YORK, Jun 26, 2000 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- International Business Machines Corp. was to unveil a new technology on Monday that effectively doubles the amount of memory in a computer. The technology could be used in desktop PCs and even handheld devices, IBM said. It will be introduced first for IBM's Netfinity line of servers with Intel processors for corporate networks and Web sites. "That will be a big boom in the low end of the Intel server market," said analyst Mark Melenovsky at International Data Corp. "Memory is one of the constraints that the Intel-based platform is facing in order to continue to expand." The memory-doubling is achieved by a chip that acts as an intermediary between the processor, which is the brain of a computer, and the memory. The chip encodes data so that it takes up half the space, IBM said. To compensate for the time it takes to encode and decode the data, the chip will store the data used most frequently by the processor in a special "cache," speeding up access. Programs for memory compression have been available for some time, but they use the processor to compact the data, slowing it down. IBM's Memory eXpansion Technology is 10,000 times faster than software-based schemes, company spokesman Matthew McMahon said. MXT could save a typical Internet service provider millions of dollars in memory, IBM said. The Armonk, N.Y., computer giant did not reveal how much the feature will cost. ServerWorks Corp., a Santa Clara, Calif., maker of chips for Intel-based servers, will license the technology from IBM and make it available to other server manufacturers. --- On the Net: http: //ibm.com http: //serverworks.com By PETER SVENSSON AP Business Writer Copyright 2000 Associated Press, All rights reserved
