Vitesse Introduces Quad Dual Data Rate Transceiver Low Cost Transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet Applications
CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2000--Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq:VTSS - news) today introduced the VSC7185, a quad 5-bit Dual Data Rate (DDR) transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet applications.
Each of the four VSC7185 transmitters accepts a 10-bit word input (8B/10B encoded), on a 5-bit bus using both clock transitions, and serializes the data for transmission. Each of the four receivers performs the reverse upon the serially received data. Four complete transceivers are contained within a single device.
This IC is ideal for manufacturers of network switches, routers, host adapters, stackable and backplane interconnection equipment and other high-density system architectures that require compliance to IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet specifications.
The four 5-bit SSTL-2 transmit and receive data parallel bus interfaces on the VSC7185 reduce the pins required for ASIC connection by at least 50% as compared to 10-bit transceivers. The integrated JTAG access port facilitates in-system testing.
The VSC7185 features a typical random jitter of only 5ps RMS, and typical deterministic jitter of 35ps peak to peak. The VSC7185 dissipates only 2.5W typical, simplifying the requirements for system cooling. The exceptional jitter tolerance of the VSC7185 allows for operation under less than optimal conditions. The low jitter generation of the VSC7185 provides for more robust system operation. The VSC7185 is a drop-in replacement for most quad 5-bit transceivers.
``In listening to our customers, we realize that there is a requirement for a second-source product like the VSC7185. By utilizing an industry-standard package and pinouts on the VSC7185, we offer networking equipment designers an option for systems now in production,'' stated Fred Weniger, product marketing manager for Vitesse's gigabit products.
``By providing greater functionality and superior signal quality at a lower price, we facilitate the networking equipment manufacturer's ability to build lower-cost, higher density Gigabit Ethernet systems with lower power requirements,'' concluded Weniger.
The VSC7185 is fully compliant with Gigabit Ethernet IEEE 802.3z specifications and is available in a 208 pin, 23mm BGA package. This 3.3V IC is priced at under $30 in quantities of 1000 with production quantities available now. |
