UNITED STATES-
Ericsson Business Unit
CDMA Systems recently
unveiled the cdma2000
packet core network
(PCN), a key component in
the evolution from
circuit-switched
environment to
third-generation (3G)
packet-switched networks.

It enables end-to-end IP
services in cdma2000
networks, delivering an "always online, always
connected" functionality. Combined with
cdma2000 1X radio equipment, it offers
operators the efficiency of packet data
transmission and a tenfold increase in data
speeds. It also allows direct access to
IP-service networks, such as the Internet,
corporate intranets and multimedia networks.

The PCN nodes have been built with full
commitment to open standards. The open R-P
interface - a link between radio access
equipment and packet data network equipment
- allows operators to choose the radio access
and the packet data components that best meet
their needs from various vendors offering open
interfaces.

The R-P interface will be incorporated into the
interoperability standard (IOS), an open
interface that facilitates multivendor
configurations in CDMA networks. The PCN
consists of the packet data service node
(PDSN), the home agent (HA), and the
authentication, authorization and accounting
(AAA) server.

Ericsson's PCN will be available to operators by
the end of 2000.
