Semicon Europa Generates Major R&D Programs for Isonics Corp.

Business/Technology Editors

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2000--Isonics Corporation
(OTC BB: ISON/ISONW) has been invited to join two new R&D programs
which will study the properties of isotopically pure silicon wafers
and determine the benefits for semiconductor devices in several areas.
These programs are the first results of Isonics's participation in
Semicon Europa, Europe's largest semiconductor conference.
The Delft Institute of Microelectronics and Submicron Technology
(DIMES), located in the Netherlands, will evaluate the use of
silicon-28 SOI (silicon-on-insulator) wafers for high frequency
applications (>1 GHz). This investigation, under the direction of Dr.
Lis K. Nanver, will focus on thermal management issues and determine
if the higher thermal conductivity of silicon-28 can improve heat
transfer on the SOI wafer. This investigation is part of a larger
program at DIMES, in cooperation with Philips Semiconductor (NYSE:
PHG), to develop silicon substrate transfer technologies.
The Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics, located in
Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, under the direction of Prof. Dr. H. Jorg
Osten, will evaluate the use of silicon 28 epitaxial wafers in
silicon-germanium-carbon BiCMOS devices for wireless
telecommunications applications. This SiGe:C technology is being
developed in cooperation with Motorola (NYSE: MOT)for use in high
performance RF circuits.
Dr. Stephen Burden, Isonics' Vice President for Semiconductor
Materials, remarked, "These research programs, conducted at
internationally recognized institutions, reflects widening interest in
the use of silicon-28 for advanced semiconductor applications such as
telecommunications that can benefit from the improved thermal
conductivity of isotopically pure silicon. We expect to build on this
interest during the upcoming Semicon West trade show."
Isonics is a world leader in isotopically engineered materials and
produces isotopically pure silicon-28 chemicals and wafers for the
semiconductor industry. Isonics also markets and sells stable isotopes
for the health care industry such as carbon-13 for diagnostic breath
tests and drug design, and oxygen-18 for positron emission tomography
(PET) imaging. Stable isotopes can be thought of as ultra pure
materials. This high degree of purification provides enhanced
properties as compared to natural materials. Additional information
