I am not sure why you are obsessed with religion being at the heart of tradition. If, as you say, a close family environment results in the traditions of that family being carried forward to the next generation, then it makes no difference if the source of the traditions were religious standards and practices or something else. The presence of "Religion" isn't the source of tradition even if the traditions reflect religious practices, where there is a religious heritage. Traditions are carried forward as a matter of familiarity and comfort.
