Infrastructure Buildout Continues - JGH
The following post are taken from the Yahoo cien thread: (Popo is James Fulop, ice_gator is a network architect, you know me.)

New start up networking company that is a consortium of utility companies trying to add value to their right of ways by installing fiber. Sounds like Williams 15 years ago.
If you do the math on all their claims; They are laying a single cable with 432 fibers over their entire route. Sounds like DWDM is very much in their future to meet all their corporate hype.
This may become a CIEN customer. Popo, you might want to track this one.
I got an additional piece of info from this article. It strongly supports my bandwidth rollout theory. Invest in equipment providers now, and move to the networkers only after they are well into consolidation phase.

At first glance, I don't see a direct connection...yet... but I will look into it and track it...I would think that Ciena's long term relationship with Enron (I believe the first entity of this nature to lay fiber along gas lines) won't hurt.....
>>Aerie has assembled the largest-ever, pre-build, right of way system. The majority of Aerie's broadband network will be built along 14,958 miles of rights of way of 12 natural gas, oil and liquid petroleum pipeline companies and communications companies. The investors in Aerie include: BP Amoco, Buckeye Partners, L.P., CMS Energy Corporation, Explorer Pipeline Company, Kinder Morgan, Marathon Ashland Pipe Line LLC, National Fuel Gas, Plantation Pipe Line Company, PG&E Corporation, Sempra Communications, Sun Pipe Line Company and TEPPCO, among others.
Aerie is backed by VantagePoint Venture Partners, a proven venture group with a track record in the top one percent of venture firms.<<

Aerie Networks (ot) by: jghutchison [ Ignore ] 6/26/00 11:57 am Msg: 100187 of 100187 I wonder what took these guys so long to get with the program.
The natural gas pipeline industry has an incredible infrastructure here in North America. Any national pipeline map clearly indicates a massive interconnecting mesh network that serves the same geographic areas as a telecommunications network. Hence, a perfect fit.
The most valuable asset is not the pipeline, it is the right-of-way. Pipelines own it, along with Federally endowed rights of eminent domain. Laying fiber in a trench along side a pipeline is a piece of cake. The rights-of-way are wide, clear of obstructions, well mapped, and monitored. The installation can be done on 24/7 in any weather. Legal obstacles are minimal.
If it were not for the pipelines utility mentality, this would have been done ten years ago. Williams and Enron are standout firms that have some entrepreneurial skills and led the way. Perhaps the time is right for this massive venture.
Aerie Networks is bringing up the rear. But this rear looks like a double-wide trailer. Ten million fiber-miles with cutting edge 40 G, 768 channel capability, terabit routers, and intelligent optical switching ain't nothing to sneeze at. Count on it.
The significance of this announcement by Aerie should not be underestimated. They will get the job done. The competition will scramble. Ciena will score. The future is bright, indeed.
