Telica Lifts Network Subscriber Performance; Broadband Edge Switching Systems Provide Continuous, Non-Blocking Service
MARLBORO, Mass., Jun 26, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Telica, Inc., today launches into the high growth broadband switching market, offering carriers an intelligent edge in broadband switching systems. Telica delivers voice and data infrastructure products for the new public network that advance carrier-class broadband service delivery from network access to the optical core across unified optical networks, giving all network subscribers continuous, non-blocking, high performance service.

Telica's true carrier-class switches serve competitive, incumbent and next-generation wireline carriers through a unique approach that integrates SS7-based intelligence with multiservice broadband switching. Using patented technologies for intelligent broadband edge switching systems, Telica solutions aggregate, simplify and normalize the switching and transport of voice and data sessions, independent of narrowband or broadband access, through a unified broadband packet network.

"The challenge of meeting today's explosive growth requires a new way of thinking about switching systems," said Telica president, CEO and co-founder, John St. Amand. "Telica's team leaders include pioneers in multiservice switching technology; fault tolerant telecommunications systems; softswitch; and SS7, IP and ATM convergence. This experience drives our fundamental belief that only an intelligent and evolutionary model can keep up with the Broadband Networking Age immediately on the horizon. Telica solutions meet the requirements of the new Age by reducing time-to-market deployment, improving Quality of Service (QoS), lowering startup and lifecycle costs, and providing versatile network survivability for broadband switching at the edge of the optical core."

"The last five years have triggered massive change across telecommunications, and have thrust exploding access/metro traffic volumes onto the core networks creating opportunities for dramatically different edge switching architectures, to accommodate not only the accelerating shift from circuit-switched to packet-based infrastructures, but also the unprecedented rise in high-capacity trunk rates and trunk counts at the switch nodes," stated Paul Johnson, telecommunications analyst with Banc Boston Robertson Stephens. "The Telica solutions address the needs of the changing networks and expand the capacity at the edge to meet the demands of today's subscribers."

Telica solutions are engineered for extremely high/protected bandwidth. They provide over 300 percent greater capacity than existing products in their class, to assure the non-blocking and low-latency performance that subscribers require. Telica solutions integrate call control, data and voice termination, aggregation and grooming, PSTN to optical packet network integration, and service intelligence. This architecture greatly increases revenue-generating ability for carriers and providers, and introduces a dramatically lower cost structure for significant capital and operational savings.

"The overall broadband switching market is poised to grow over 50 percent each quarter during the next year, approaching a $14 billion industry by the beginning of 2001," commented Ron Westfall, Senior Analyst with Current Analysis. "Telica is strategically positioned to capitalize on this rapidly expanding market sector. The Telica platform allows carriers to flexibly deploy broadband and narrowband services at the edge of the network, accommodating the full spectrum of carrier operational switching and transport architectures."

Telica solutions reside at the edge of the optical network, ready to handle the new requirements for voice and data sessions such as voice-over-packet, VoDSL, optimized Internet access and 800-number translation. The product provides integrated voice and data services through IP, ATM, SS7, ISDN and TDM interfaces on a single platform. When sessions are initiated by subscribers through end-office elements, the Telica switching system uses intelligent, integrated signaling and call control to provide call setup. Once the circuit or session is terminated on the Telica platform, the intelligent call processing software determines the optimal way to groom and aggregate the traffic before it is delivered to the optical core network or switched to another network element.

The company's recently announced partnership with Redback Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq: RBAK chart, msgs) links Telica's SS7-based multiservice switching architecture with Redback's Subscriber Management System (SMS), providing the next generation of optimized network access for the 200 million+ current worldwide dial-up Internet subscribers.

Telica, with its intelligent broadband switching systems in field trials today, will announce its suite of scalable hardware and software platforms later in the year, at which time more detailed architecture, product and pricing information will be available.

Telica unveils its evolutionary strategy for intelligent broadband switching systems this week in Booth 1022 at Broadband Year 2000 in San Jose, Calif.
