"France's U.N. Ambassador Jean-David Levitte, the current Security council
president, said, "we consider that there are evolutions for the better in
Khartoum, and France is not the only member of the council to consider that these
positive evolutions should be registered one way or the other in the Security Council."

A senior U.N. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, also said in New
York that the Egyptians and Ethiopians want sanctions against Sudan lifted.
Since the Egyptian attack was the reason for instituting the sanctions, the
official said there should no longer be any reason to maintain them."
