Wily, Thanks for your two posts that look at wafer cost and chip densities.

I would send you a CompactFlash card to measure, but I am afraid it might be dissected and rendered useless.

SanDisk has a new packaging patent for MMC that somehow allows the memory chip and controller to be mounted on a ciruit board that essential makes up the final product. Everything except the contacts are then enveloped in plastic, sort of like a chocolate covered cherry...

...just sweeter.

BTW, SanDisk has had great technical difficulty stacking chips in the MMC form factor. Thus, by design SDMC is slightly thicker. 2001 will bring 512Mbit chips will allow for a 64MB "unstacked" MMC which would be ideal for the MP3 market. You can see that MMC's technical requirements will act as a barrier to entry, as will '987.
