Aldrums, re DSL/dialup,

I have had my DSL and dialup connections on simultaneously many times without problem, with the dialup connection minimized on the task bar, just a click away if needed. As I gained confidence in the consistency of my DSL, I have found it unnecessary to do this however.

They are on separate phone lines though. I always encountered disconnects when using the dialup on my voice line, so I got a second line, a straight run from the telco box. Before signing on to the DSL, I replaced that straight run with CAT 5 wire and now have a three connector outlet next to the PC, voice, dialup and DSL, with a spare line for a fax or whatever.

I'm not sure, of course, if this is the answer for your situation, but it is worth looking into.
