Palm to Introduce Slot for New Secure Digital Memory Card

--From AOl.-- Cooters

Santa Clara, California, June 26 (Bloomberg) -- Palm Inc., the No. 1 maker of handheld electronic organizers, said it will offer devices next year with a slot for a new type of memory card that's about the size of a postage stamp.

Palm will include a slot for cards based on the Secure Digital standard developed by SanDisk Corp., Toshiba Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. The so-called SD cards will be available this year, Palm said.

The cards could function as backup memory or contain software for features like maps and music. They'll have 32 megabytes or 64 megabytes of memory, four times or eight times the memory Palm organizers offer. SD cards could also function as modems or computer-network connectors, said John Cook, Palm senior director of consumer product marketing.

Palm organizers already have a slot that lets users attach add-ons such as a modem. Other devices based on the Palm software have slots for other types of expansion cards, such as Compact Flash modules or Handspring Inc.'s Springboard units.

Shares of Santa Clara, California-based Palm rose 1 15/16 to 28 1/4.
