I hope so, but it's going to take Sun giving in, because I can't see IBM caving. If you looked at the Java comunity process, the final vote allows Sun a veto. This is not acceptable for a company that looks to sell $10+++ billion a year in software. IBM is not looking to take control of Java, they just want Sun to pass it on to a standards organization.

To really understand how Sun will benefit from Java, please read this:

It's only a 8 page pdf, and even a non-techie can see the advantages for Sun if Java can get big on the server side. But what is far more important is how big a disadvantage IA64 will be if Java gets big. IA64 is a big threat to commoditize the server market, that can't be ignored.
