Harmonic off sharply after warning

Monday June 26, 6:41 pm Eastern Time

NEW YORK, June 26 (Reuters) - Shares in Harmonic Inc (NasdaqNM:HLIT - news) were pummelled in afterhours trade on Monday after the communications product provider warned of lower-than-expected second-quarter earnings.

Shares in Harmonic traded at 28 on the Instinet electronic trading system and 27-5/8 on the Island system after closing at 40-13/16, for a gain of 1-13/16 earlier on Nasdaq. The stock was halted earlier in the day.

After the market closed, Harmonic said it expected second-quarter earnings of between 12 and 16 cents a share as sales to customer AT&T (NYSE:T - news) continued to decline. Analysts had expected Harmonic to earn 29 cents a share for the quarter, according to investment research firm First Call/Thomson Financial. Harmonic will announce its results on or about July 19.
