Price of 64M DRAM chips surges to $9
The spot market price of 64M DRAM chips has soared to $9 apiece. Industry sources said yesterday that 64M (8 by 8) PC100 synchronous DRAMs traded for $8.62-$9.14 on the international spot market Monday, up 5.8 percent from Friday.

The 64M DRAM price rebounded to the $9 level for the first time since early January.

The price of 64M (8x8) PC133 DRAMs also jumped 3.4 percent to $8.5-$9.01, while that for 128M (8x16) PC100 DRAMs rose 3.3 percent to $16.56-$17.55.

The sources cited the low inventory of the chips for the rebound and expected the price of the 64M DRAMs to climb to the $10 level in the third quarter.

The inventory of both Samsung and Hyundai Electronics, which usually maintain four to five months of supply, is fast depleting because of the surge in demand in the second quarter.
