(NYSE: AOL chart, msgs), the world's leading interactive services company, and InterTrust Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ITRU chart, msgs), the leading developer of distributed digital rights management (DRM) technology, today announced that they have entered into an agreement under which AOL will use InterTrust's MetaTrust Utility(TM) DRM system. InterTrust will be a preferred technology provider for AOL. This agreement establishes AOL's first DRM partnering relationship. AOL will also distribute InterTrust's client software, the InterRights Point(TM), on promotional CDs containing AOLs 6.0 client software later this year.
Under the agreement, InterTrust will enable AOL deployment of DRM-supported applications and services. AOL will be able to respond quickly to new e-business opportunities in music, publishing, video and other markets. The first use of this technology will be enabling the Winamp music player as a MetaTrust Certified(TM) application for playing music protected by InterTrust's DigiBox(R) secure containers.
"By choosing InterTrust as a preferred technology provider and offering a MetaTrust Certified Winamp player, we can offer our members and content partners a comprehensive digital trust system they can both benefit from," said Jonathan Sacks, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the AOL service.
"We are pleased with this comprehensive relationship with AOL, the world's most important Internet online service provider," said Victor Shear, Chairman and CEO, InterTrust Technologies. "This represents one of InterTrust's most significant relationships to date and should speed distribution, adoption and use of the MetaTrust Utility. "
