Sewon to export 4.5 mil. mobile phones
Sewon Telecom said yesterday it has signed a contract with Vitelcom to supply CDMA and GSM handsets worth about $700 million.

Starting September, the company will export 3 million GSM handsets to major European wireless carriers via Vitelcom. While the company's products in Spain will be sold under Vitelcom name, its handsets will be sold under its own name in the rest of Europe, according to the company.

In the South American market, the company is transferring production material, parts and production know-how to Vitelcom Brazil which will then assemble and market the products, making royalty payments to Sewon Telecom on the number of manufactured handsets.

The company expects to export materials for some 1.5 million CDMA handsets over the next three years starting next month.

With yesterday's contract, exports will be greatly bolstered, accounting for 70 percent of all its production next year from the current 30 percent, the company said.
