Just how much power does Alan Greenspan really have? Everybody seems to say interest rates are a lightning rod for the rest of the economy, but I'm non convinced.

The media seems to be part of the problem (as usual)... On the one hand, they say that interest rates and the Fed are just one of the many factors effecting stock prices. On the other hand, they say things like the interest rate rise "has begun to have the desired effects of slower growth and weakening inflationary pressures."

This feeds the notion that whether Greenspan says to-may-to or to-mah-to at any given time should change the valuation of the stock market by billions upon billions of dollars. Ridiculous!!!
