how come their mutual funds perform so poorly?

Because their trading desk shorts the mutual fund holdings starting in April, when the fund managers say that new inflows have dried up. Of course, the fund managers could have held back some cash during the first qtr, but then the trading desk wouldn't get a good price when they sold.

Net result: the poor suckers putting money into 401Ks and IRAs at the beginning of the year get clobbered each April, and think that it's just bad luck. All of this year's inflows are now owned by the trading firms. Can't figure why the SEC allows both operations in one firm.
