In Gilder's May issue he seems to agree with you that intelligence and lots of it, belongs at the edge of the network. To paraphrase:

"The router market will continue to grow but be pushed to the edge of the network. This will cause not the reduction of the market but a huge expansion of it. They will be needed at the edge of the network (in greater numbers) to handle the very flood of optical data that is driving them out of the core of the network"
