What is a "typical" Republican?

Helms?
Whitman or Ridge?
McCain?
Specter?
Quayle?
Reagan?
Lincoln?
Nixon?
Robertson?

Socially and morally there appears to be a lot of wiggle
room under the "big tent" don't you think?

Economically I think there's a bit more consistency.

From a left of center point of view,
one may argue that a strong national defense
is code language for allocating jobs within a Senator
of Representative's district per seniority in
order to provide jobs for many systems
the Pentagon doesn't even want or need. This has been
dubbed the "Military Welfare State".

Whether or not, one does or doesn't agree with
this point of view, government tax dollars
and procurement drive a lot of these defense
(ie security) industries in two ways. 1). Contracts
for specific systems and programs. 2). Costs
to mobilize to counteract the proliferation of
weapons sold abroad sometimes supplied by the
US industries that originally got contracts and
subsidies.

One could argue that like with the space program,
government financing through allocation of tax
dollars has spun off a number of industries and
technologies including the internet originally developed
for the department of defense (sorry Al).

One could also take Friedman's point of view
that the military (defense of the country an the
country's concerns)is the only common concern
that the Government should spend money on.

What is your point of view?
