Hi Jack, there are (in addition to the link Mike gave) a few related posts on this (the *NEW*) thread for some of the companies besides T-Beam&LU playing in this "optical wireless" sandbox. I'll search for the links later and post them, but in the interim here's a recent press release from Dominion, to go along with the one from Cable-Free that I posted the other day:

Dominion Communications Selects Narus IBI Solutions as Strategic Technology Platform for Its DAViD Net.

Next Generation Service Provider - Utilizing Innovative 'Optical Wireless' Technology - to Deploy NARUS IBI Solutions to Create and Deploy New Broadband
Services

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 21 /PRNewswire/ --

NARUS Inc., the pioneer and leading provider of Internet Business Infrastructure (IBI) solutions, today announced that Dominion Communications has selected NARUS IBI Solutions, including the NARUS IBI Solutions platform and NARUS Billing Mediation System (BMS), for deployment on its cutting-edge DAViD Net service. DAViD Net utilizes state-of-the-art "optical wireless" technology to cost-effectively deliver high-bandwidth broadband services to residential and business customers.

NARUS IBI solutions enable Dominion to create and implement new business models and services, and to create value-based billing plans designed to target lucrative market segments, such as broadband services, pre-paid services and others.

"NARUS IBI Solutions provide us with the tools we need to have greater flexibility in the way we structure and bill for differentiated and value-added services," said Mark Doucet, co-founder of Dominion Communications. "Plus, for the first time, we will be able to bill on a usage basis, as well as have full accountability for customer usage. This is vital as we roll out new services based on the DAViD Net network platform."

Dominion has developed patent-pending optical networking technology that utilizes infrared-spectrum light or lasers, instead of the radio-frequency (RF) technology found in most fixed wireless broadband applications today. This innovative technology allows Dominion, through DAViD Net, to bring robust broadband services to business and residential customers at a lower capital cost.

DAViD Net consists of a series of optical repeaters, integrated with high-speed routing and switching technology, in a "hub-and-spoke" topology. NARUS Analyzers collect data from each of the hub locations on the DAViD Net system, while NARUS Virtual Analyzers collect Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) data from perimeter devices. Usage information is then sent to NARUS Logic Servers for aggregation. This multi-tiered collection method will allow Dominion to differentiate traffic as being either on DAViD Net or off DAViD Net, allowing the company to respectively rate the traffic.

"Dominion is leveraging cutting-edge technology to provide a wide array of broadband services to its customers, and we are pleased that NARUS IBI solutions can play an integral role in their business success," said Mark Stone, president of NARUS. "This deployment shows the flexibility of the NARUS IBI Solutions platform, in that Dominion can collect both on-network and off-network information, and provide usage-based billing that maps to the customer's particular usage patterns."

The NARUS applications are based on the NARUS IBI platform, which gathers detailed customer and network usage information directly from high-speed, carrier-grade IP networks, as well as from a variety of sources including server log files, routers and switches, and makes that information available to applications from NARUS and third parties. A growing list of NARUS Solutions Partners are integrating their applications with the NARUS platform, adding comprehensive, real-time usage data to their billing, customer care, fraud detection, churn management, and other key operational and business support system (OSS/BSS) applications.

IBI applications from NARUS include the NARUS Billing Mediation System (BMS), which enables key customer care and billing applications with accurate usage information, in real time; and NARUS Intelligence, which provides detailed reports on network and customer usage, allowing IP service providers to make key decisions that can drive revenues and profitability.
